What Do You Do With An Idea?

I had an idea and it wouldn’t stop following me around…

I starting FoodGrads in February of this year and its been the most humbling experience I have ever had. I heard that it would be, but similar to when people tell you–before you have your first baby–that you’ll be tired from sleep deprivation, you don’t know what that really feels like until you are holding the baby in the middle of the night, way past the point of return. If you want to read a first year ’round up’ post, full of credible advice from an experienced successful entrepreneur, you’re in the wrong place. I’m just at the beginning, and not afraid to admit it!

I started this confident that I had a great idea to execute, and a ton of enthusiasm and passion to get it done. Now, almost a year on, this journey has taught me just how little I know and the support and insight from others is what will make or break the business. I checked my ego, let go of being right (or at least thinking I was) and was willing to listen and learn from those who can teach me, all the while staying enthusiastic and ignoring my personal doubts when my confidence was challenged.

The best advice I can give at this stage (and this is for students, new grads and anyone else reading this) is never stop learning and don’t be too proud to ask for help when you are out of your depth–which you will be–more often than not. I have called upon the network of awesome people I have surrounding me (they know who they are). They have fueled my existing passion for the business and given me the confidence to keep moving forward.  If you lack self-assurance in general and it’s something you need to work on–it doesn’t stop you starting a business –you just need to surround yourself with the right people. I’ve come into contact with so many successful and accomplished professionals, and it’s very intimidating (and age is not a factor) but I knew I would never forgive myself for letting a lack of confidence stop me. In my experience the confidence builds as the business does. Don’t let anything stop you pursuing your great idea (whether it’s a job, business or trip to Fiji).

I read, a lot….

The Most Influential and Inspiring Books I’ve Read this Year

Originals by Adam Grant

Dare to be different and think outside the box. This book celebrates the ones who have and want to do things differently. It legitimises the process and encourages you to block out the ‘noise’ and doubters. It’s okay to have an idea and act on it, it takes guts for sure and who knows where it will take you?

Start With Why by Simon Sinek

If you are embarking on entrepreneurship, this is a must read. Defining your purpose and asking yourself the right questions at the beginning will enable you to create a plan of action. Your ‘Why’ is the main priority then you can figure out the ‘What’ and ‘How’. Of all the business books I have read, this made the most sense to me. The fact is, the most successful businesses never lost sight of their ‘Why’.

Simon Sinek is a true leader when it comes to understanding people, here’s a clip from a recent interview about Millennials and the workplace, I don’t think anyone captures the truth like Simon does–from recent grads to CEOs, his explanations will benefit everyone willing to listen, accept and take action.

A Taste of Generation Yum by Eve Turow Paul

Eve takes you into the hearts and minds of the most talked about generation–Millennials or Gen Y and uncovers their relationship with food. It may sound like a strange topic to write a book about but trust me when I say it’s eye opening and important beyond belief for the future of food for us all. Eve gives you a sneak peek into their food world. She is currently researching Gen Z, how technology influences their social lives and of course their relationship with food. Can’t wait!

What Do You Do With An Idea by Kobi Yamada

I will treasure this book, and it only took me 5 minutes to read. I will read it over and over, as it tickled my heart and will remind me on those tough days why I am determined to keep moving forward with my little idea.

2017 Goals

A goal I personally have is to overcome my fear of presenting and public speaking. I know on the whole I am not alone with this phobia, but I see most people get through it (and to me they make it look easy–perhaps that’s just my perception– or they are great at hiding their nerves, which I am not). I confess, I will do anything to avoid having to get up there. I realize it’s time to look at this problem as an opportunity for growth. I have several university visits lined up for early 2017 and have been assured that video is the next ‘thing’ I need to be doing. So, you are going to see more of me, like it or not!

It’s been a great year, full of ups and downs. I’m enjoying every moment and feeling very grateful for this opportunity. To offer career advice, to be an ear that will listen, to provide a platform for others to shine and to connect people gives me purpose and job satisfaction–and there’s no better feeling. Having a purpose in life and being able to fulfill that through my work is a gift, and I don’t take that for granted one bit.

By next year–at this time–I hope to be able to give you some entrepreneurial ‘gems’ just like some of those intimidating business owners I mentioned can, but alas, for now, this is all I’ve got.

2017

Me & my cheerleaders!

All the best for 2017, and thank you truly for the continued support.
