Certified Culinary Scientist ® Examination Prep Program
Last Updated on February 24, 2023
As part of our mission here at FoodGrads we strive to bring awareness to the Food Industry and the exciting opportunities for a purposeful career.
We are thrilled to support Griffith Foods, The Culinary Institute of Canada at Holland College, and Canada’s Smartest Kitchen in introducing a Certified Culinary Scientist ® (CCS) examination preparatory program.
Having been a recruiter for almost 10 years in the food industry, this program is ‘music to my ears’. Over the years but especially more recently, clients request individuals with both Science and Culinary skill sets–to meet the objectives of their organizations–but these people were fondly regarded as ‘purple unicorns’. We knew they existed, there had been sightings, but they are rare and VERY hard to lure away!
Currently, there are only 183 Certified Culinary Scientists in the world, so this is an exciting time and amazing opportunity to be a pioneer in the industry and open up increased product development credibility and expertise. If your career objective involves making yourself an indispensable, valued member of a R&D team within a food organization, this will be the first step you need to take.
We see Certified Culinary Scientist® certification as becoming the new industry standard of certification for scientists and product development professionals Jim Thorne, General Manager, Griffith Food
This program is an extension of Griffiths’ commitment to the Food Industry, identifying the overwhelming desire in the industry for scientific knowledge and aptitude to meet creative, innovative culinary expertise.

3 reasons why this program is different to anything else.

We at Griffith Foods have long recognized the power of merging the artistic and scientific mindset. Griffith Foods is focused on creating better together and we are excited to be part of this program, which we believe will help create better food, together as an industry, for the consumer’s “ Jim Thorne, General Manager, Griffith Foods
The program is aimed at people who already hold the required scientific credentials to gain hands-on culinary proficiency and facilitate comprehension of current key industry food development topics. This could include people with a Bachelor of Science, who have at least 3 years of Research and Development experience.
As far as new product development goes, traditionally we have had people coming from two different backgrounds, Food Science and Culinary. However, the current product development model requires individuals to have great understanding of both foods science and culinary (who through certification are called Culinologists). We need more Culinologists in the industry and this program will be a great tool to help ensure people are able to achieve this certification. Chef Subra Balakrishnan, Griffith Foods
So, whether you are just starting out in your career or looking to strengthen your skill set, CCS Certification is fast becoming the new industry standard, as many companies are looking to hire R&D professionals, that have Culinary expertise too.
